Nostalgia Download!!! The Beatings Cover GBV!!!

We’ve been sorting through tons of disks and files, culling what will be the extra/bonus tracks  included on the upcoming untitled Beatings  remastered/reissued EP’s compilation due out later this year… and we came upon this gem.  If memory serves me, and it often doesn’t, this was somewhere around 2003/2004 after the  “Italiano” LP but before the “If Not Now, Then When” EP. The Beatings closed a headlining slot at the now defunct Continental, located off St. Marks in NYC with “Smothered in Hugs” by Guided By Voices.  The sound is taken from the booth which was close to the front, so the room sounds sparse.  But I don’t ever remember us not filling that room so I’m calling bullshit on the crowd mics.  I don’t know… maybe no one was there.  But I’d prefer to remember it packed… it’s a matter of pride, sue me.

Beatings on the Television

If you don’t live in the metro Boston area you probably/maybe have only a peripheral knowledge of “The Bubbler”,   the super informative music oriented and band profile  show hosted by Ryan Spaulding of the Ryan’s Smashing Life blog and aired on CBS’ MyTV 38 Sunday nights over the last few months.  We love the show and reviewed, profiled  and posted a clip (featuring me) a few posts ago.

Recently, the show aired a profile and extended interview with The Beatings, where we talked about the band and Midriff.  Since we announced it’s broadcast, we’ve been getting emails from fans and friends outside of MA asking where they can see the segment.  Here it is… for your consideration.

Oscar Worthy Performance?

To: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science

Re: MiniBoone “Brand New Thing” and specifically Cameron Keiber’s groundbreaking performance… I broke ground!!!

Our buddy Pat Breen of GarbageTown Films just released a video for MiniBoone’s “Brand New Thing”. It’s a beautiful and fantastical story of two kids’ journey to get fucked up on junk food. They steal, reflect and party at Bigfoot’s house all while trippin’ balls.

But our favorite part is the stellar performance by the young fresh faced actor playing the convenience store clerk, a subtle yet complex portrayal of a man struggling against time and disrespectful youth to reclaim his rightful place in a chaotic world. A performance that is only enhanced once one lipreads the immense stream of profanities flung from his mouth in such a short amount of screen time. The role of a lifetime not so much for the actor but for you, the viewer, and Beatings/Eldridge Rodriguez fans the world round.  All this and looks too… I’m officially a triple threat! Oh, and Pat made one hell of an awesome video.  For your consideration…

UPDATE!!! UPDATE !!!! Midriff vs. Verbicide Mag. for Night VI of Residency at Radio

We are half way through our year long residency at Radio in Somerville, Ma commemorating our decade of indie/DIY music. It’s a blast. We have something special happening for the July edition.   We’ve asked our friends at the online magazine Verbicide to co-curate the evening. It’s going to be great.  We’ve been fans of Verbicide since back when they were publishing their print edition. What is great about their magazine is that although music is heavily featured their focus goes beyond that.  Verbicide’s Fiction section is fantastic and their original Comics are inspired.  It’s really a great institution, with tons to check out and if you haven’t been visiting them regularly you are cheating yourself.  We really dig them and were psyched that they’d be building the July bill with us.

Show Rundown: Italiano Tenth Anniversary Party 03.23.12

The Beatings: ItalianoOur big thanks to everyone who came out for the Italiano Tenth Anniversary show at Radio last Friday.

The Beatings released Italiano in February 2002, giving birth to Midriff Records and beginning our voyage in the world of independent music. Italiano was picked as the fifth best record of 2002 by the Washington Post, and was received incredibly well nationally as we crisscrossed the country touring in support. Ten years and one month later, we took the stage at Radio to perform the album in its entirety. To the best we can recollect, it was a first.

The night was kicked off with a tremendous set by Louder My Dear, with frontman Dave multi-tasking the night away with DJ sets under his Celebrity Handjob moniker. Following LMD was NYC’s Relations, whose post-punk set blew us away. Keep an eye on those kids, won’t you?

The Beatings: Italiano LIVE!

Holy crap are we old. This year marks the 10th anniversary of The Beatings’ Italianoan album that the Washington Post picked as their #5 Editor’s pick on their “Best of 2002″ list (it beat Eminem), Punk Planet raved about, the Village Voice routinely cheered when previewing The Beatings NYC shows at the time, LA Weekly championed, Mojo featured, The New York Times dug and their hometown of Boston completely ignored.

Well Boston, we believe in second chances…don’t blow it. To celebrate the album’s birthday, the band will be playing Italiano in its entirety as part of our residency at Radio on Friday March 23, with guests Louder My Dear, the Relations (from NYC) and DJ sets by Celebrity Handjob. Expect a circus.

Boston Band Crush Hearts The Beatings & E.R.

Boston Band CrushWe love the guys at Boston Band Crush. Especially when they talk up one of our shows, and boy, do they have some nice things to say about our little old Beatings. Go give it a look-see. They also added Eldridge Rodriguez to their March 2011 Sampler, so we’re kinda crushing them right back these days. Take a gander over at their site and roam around and see what goes on in Boston. They’re performing a necessary public service.
